One of my projects for next season will be clown hets. He arrived this week and will be more than ready to do his thing.

Greg Graziani and Barometric Pressure

Ralph Davis hosted Greg Graziani for one of his podcasts, and Mr. Graziani made an interesting observation. He suggests that barometric pressure plays a huge role in reproduction for ball pythons, citing a horrid production year during a drought year in Florida. He also indicates that, with The Snake Keeper's move to Utah, a place with abundant snow, i.e., high barometric pressure, it will be interesting to see if the move significantly stimulates their production.

This theory makes a lot of sense. Like he says, and I echo, the African ball python, sensing lack of sustenance, would commit suicide by trying to breed during such weather, given the weight loss after the birth. How's she supposed to go against instinct and rely on humans for sustenance? Naturally, she would use her own sense of perception, and barometric pressure is definitely something she could sense.

Now, I'd like to add to that theory: I've had a gerbil explosion. I have squeakers everywhere. I've kept gerbils for about a year, starting with a colony of five I stole from Rusty's snake room. We had slow growth...until the past few months following a very wet, stormy summer for us here in the Midwest. He asked me last night how many cages I needed. I have no clue! Since October, my gerbil population has doubled! This is another African species, a native food source for the wild ball python, and it goes hand in hand with Mr. Graziani's barometric pressure theory. Rusty's African soft-furred rats are doing just fine, as well. He tells me there are a bunch of panda-faced offspring.

We hope this portends great things for Rusty's breeding season!

2008 Expectations

Even though i did some breeding last year, I think of this as my 1st real year of breeding ball pythons. Much like any other breeder, I have spent a lot of time, effort and money into doing this and I am hoping for a big reward coming soon, in the way of hatchlings.

Maybe my expectations are set high, but my hope is for 1 female morph from each clutch of eggs. More than that would be great.
